As you begin the job hunt, you are going through a cycle of applying to endless job applications. Leveraging the power of networking connects you with the right people who can open doors and potentially fast-track the application process and land you that first interview. This insider edge can give you a significant advantage over other candidates.
Step 1: Become Discoverable
If you haven’t done so already, CREATE A LINKEDIN!!! This is your digital calling card to showcase your skills and experience to potential employers and connections.
Begin connecting with individuals in your community, school, company, etc.
Your headline is your first impression, so make it count! Here's a simple tip: State your current position and company (e.g., Business Student at Duke University) or highlight your area of expertise (e.g., Aspiring Marketing Professional).
Step 2: Leverage the power of LinkedIn Filter
LinkedIn’s advanced search is the secret weapon! Leverage LinkedIn’s advanced search to narrow down the individuals with specific positions, companies, and even colleges.
For those who are students in college, LEVERAGE your school's alumni. The chances of a school alumni willing to help you are very high. It can provide a warm introduction for yourself as both parties already have something in common.
Example: Networking with Business Analyst @ Amazon
Going on the company’s LinkedIn page
Clicking on “Employees”
Clicking “All Filter”
Scrolling down to the “Keywords” Section

Click on “Show Results
Begin connecting & messaging
Step 3: Crafting your message
As you’re beginning to connect with industry professionals, crafting the right message will be the determining factor on whether or not he/she will reply. LinkedIn allows for a short note (300 Characters) before sending out a connection– use it wisely! It’s a perfect opportunity to introduce yourself + the reason for the connection. Down below are messages that I’ve sent out that lead to referrals/insights about the company.
Example 1:
Hi Amy! I saw that you got your Master's at Duke! Go Blue Devils! As a student who is currently studying MIS at Duke and is very interested in the PM space at Microsoft, I wanted to connect and learn more about you and your life as a PM!
Example 2:
Hi Joe! I'm a student at Washington State and currently preparing for an interview for the project manager intern next week. Congrats on 2 decades at Nintendo! That is truly amazing. I wanted to connect and learn more about you and your experience with the company. Looking forward to hearing from you.
Rules to messaging:
Personalize It: Avoid generic greetings. Mention something specific about their profile like an impressive achievement (like Example 2).
Keep it Brief: Aim for 3-4 concise sentences. State your purpose clearly and be respectful of their time.
Show Your Enthusiasm: Express your genuine interest in their career path or the company.
Building Relationships: It's a Two-Way Street
Networking is about building genuine connections, not just making requests. Approach your outreach with the intent to learn and connect. Ask thoughtful questions about their experience and the company. This builds trust and fosters a lasting relationship, making them more likely to be a helpful resource down the line.
Scheduling 1:1 meetings, either in person or virtually, takes your connections to the next level. These focused discussions allow you to showcase your personality, dive deeper into your background and goals, and ultimately, create a more memorable and impactful connection.
Long-Term Engagement: Stay Connected!
Don't let connections fade after one interaction. Follow up, congratulate them on achievements, or simply send a birthday greeting. These small gestures demonstrate your interest in building a long-term relationship.
Proactively build your network now! These connections are a valuable resource you can refer to when it comes time to navigate your career and land your desired job!
Keep Connecting
Networking is a numbers game, and not everyone will respond. You'll encounter individuals who will ghost you, but that shouldn't discourage you!
